Position Summary

The Directorate for Geosciences is offering a detail opportunity to serve as the Acting Section Head, Antarctic Sciences Section, Office of Polar Programs (OPP). This detail is open to all qualified NSF employees and IPAs currently working at NSF and will not exceed one year in 120-day increments. For purposes of pay and benefits, the selectee will continue to encumber the position from which detailed. The individual selected will be required to file an “Executive Branch Personnel Public Financial Disclosure Report” (OGE-278) in accordance with the Ethics in Government Act of 1978 at the beginning and completion of the detail assignment.

Position Description

The Acting Antarctic Section Head is responsible to the Office Director of Polar Programs for the overall planning, funding, and implementation of U.S. Antarctic Program activities, including scientific research and associated logistic support. The incumbent coordinates and supervises the work of science Program Managers in five core disciplines including glaciology, astrophysics, and geospace sciences, ocean and atmospheric sciences, earth sciences, and organisms and ecosystems, as well as a broad interdisciplinary program called the Antarctic integrated system science and a section wide program for instrumentation and research facilities. The incumbent works closely in collaboration with the Section Head for Antarctic Infrastructure and Logistics in implementing research that requires logistical support in the Antarctic.

Professional/Technical Requirements:  Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience, or a combination of education and equivalent experience in at least one of the Geosciences disciplines.
