For his study of the neuromechanics of locomotion on granular substrates, which addresses how movement results from the interaction of body morphology and posture, muscles, Central Pattern Generators, and sensory systems with the physical features of complex environments. And for his efforts in utilizing robots to generate interest and teach principles of science to students, teachers, and the public.
