For leading an area of research that integrates developmental biology, behavior, genetics and evolution to clarify a fundamental biological question about how developmental and physiological constraints affect the evolution of extreme shapes in animals. Emlen also develops wide-ranging research experiences and courses in evolution for undergraduate students.
