Dr. Stephanie Gage

Dr. Stephanie Gage is delighted to be serving as a AAAS fellow in NSF's Divisions of Information and Intelligent Systems and Integrative Organismal Systems. Trained as a neurobiologist, she has used her expertise in different capacities. As a Ph.D. student in neuroscience at the University of Arizona, she studied neuromodulation in olfactory-guided behavior, using insects as model systems. This basic research was then applied toward understanding honeybee biology and colony loss as a postdoctoral researcher with the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service. This work as a federal scientist spurned Stephanie's interest in working as a civil servant in science and technology policy. To expand her perspective in the realms of quantitative biosciences and technology, she pursued a second postdoctoral position at the Georgia Institute of Technology. There, she worked with biophysicists and engineers to better understand sensory-motor integration in flight control. Stephanie is passionate about cross-sector collaborations, the vitality of basic research, and making higher education more accessible, diverse and inclusive.
