How does NSF use the donations it receives?

Your contributions are considered an unconditional gift to NSF and will be "used in furtherance of one or more of the general purposes of the agency" (42 U.S.C. § 1870(f)).

NSF is an independent federal agency, organized under the "National Science Foundation Act of 1950" (42 U.S.C. § 1861 et seq.), and funds donated to NSF will be used for public purposes as authorized by that act.

Will my donation be tax deductible?

While NSF cannot provide tax advice, donations made to NSF may be tax deductible under Section 170(c)(1) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986, as amended. Potential donors should consult with their tax advisors.

Does NSF accept all donations it receives?

NSF's decision to accept a donation is discretionary and is based in part upon public policy considerations. Generally, the foundation will not accept donations from a person or organization that is doing business with or seeking to do business with NSF.
