Theme: Rural and Remote Communities: Examining Ways to Unleash STEM Education and Workforce Opportunities

Day 1: Wednesday, May 29, 9:30 am to 5:15 pm (EST)

Opening Session:  9:30 am – 10:10 am

Session 1: Understanding Rural STEM Education and Workforce Development

10:10 am – 11:45 am

This session will begin with presentations from a panel of experts in Rural STEM Education, including an overview of EDU’s portfolio focused on Rural STEM Education. Following a moderated Q&A session there will be a discussion among EDU Advisory Committee members.

Break: 11:45 am – noon

Session 2: Voices from the Field – The Impact of EDU Investments

Noon – 1:40 pm

During this working lunch, we will begin by hearing from “Voices in the Field.” Specifically, nine individuals across varying rural regions of the United States will discuss their experiences living in rural America in the context of STEM Education. Following a moderated Q&A session there will be a discussion among EDU Advisory Committee members.

Session 3: Principal Investigator Panel - Rural STEM Education and Workforce Development

1:55 pm – 3:35 pm

This session will begin with a panel discussion from several NSF/EDU funded principal investigators conducting educational research, both basic and applied, in rural settings across the United States. Following a moderated Q&A session there will be a discussion among EDU Advisory Committee members.

Session 4: Breakout Discussion - Unleashing Opportunities in Rural and Remote Communities

3:50 pm – 4:50 pm

EDU’s Advisory Committee and attendees will be divided into four groups to discuss unleashing opportunities in STEM education for rural and remote communities. During the meeting, the links for the breakout rooms will be posted in zoom for attendees to choose which virtual room or rooms to attend. Each breakout room will be assigned a note taker who will create a PowerPoint presentation to be shared during session 6 on Day 2.

Closing Session for Day 1: 4:50 pm – 5:15 pm

 

Day 2: Thursday, May 30, 2024, 9:30 am to 2:00 pm (EST)

Session 5: Rural STEM Education and Workforce Development Across EDU Divisions

9:30 am – 10:35 am

During this session, hear from each of EDU’s Division Directors as they discuss their vision and their division’s experience in serving rural and remote communities while advancing STEM education and workforce development. Following a moderated Q&A session there will be a discussion among EDU Advisory Committee members.

Session 6: Pulling It All Together to Unleash Opportunities in STEM Education

10:35 am – 11:30 am

Each group will report on yesterday’s Session 4 breakout discussion. EDU Advisory Committee members will then engage in a discussion and provide insight to EDU on advancing STEM education and workforce development in rural America.

Preparation for Meeting with Chief Operating Officer

11:30 am – noon

EDU Advisory Committee members will collaborate as they identify questions and summarize recommendations to provide to the Chief Operations Officer and Chief of Staff from NSF’s Office of the Director.

Lunch and Break: noon – 1:00 pm

Meet with Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff: 1:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Closing Session: 1:30 pm – 2:00 pm
