About the lecture
The Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP) was developed by Dr. Herbert Schroeder at the University of Alaska, Anchorage as a scholarship program for Alaska Native students interested in baccalaureate degrees and careers in engineering. Initiated in 1995, ANSEP has evolved into a longitudinal education model that supports students from 5th-grade through Ph.D. studies.

The ANSEP effort involves partnership with hundreds of corporations, philanthropic organizations, state and federal agencies, universities, high schools, and middle schools. ANSEP brings together a community of students, faculty, staff, and industry partners to strengthen social ties, encourage teamwork, and stimulate cultural enrichment.

The ANSEP model identifies participants early, engages students at critical times in their academic careers, and tackles some of the toughest issues in science and engineering education. ANSEP provides academic support to eliminate the need for university remediation and associated costs for government and families, increases retention, cuts down student expenses, as well as reducing the requirement for state funding through accelerating degree completion.

About the speaker
Dr. Herbert Schroeder is the Vice Provost for, and Founder of, the Alaska Native Science & Engineering Program (ANSEP), and Professor of Engineering at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Dr. Schroeder earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, an M.S. in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University, and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Dr. Schroeder has received many honors, including a Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring in 2004, the Alaska Federation of Natives Denali Award in 2005, the greatest honor presented by the Federation to a non-Native, and in 2018 the George Norlin Award from the University of Colorado Boulder. In 2009, the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) honored him with the Reginald H. Jones Distinguished Service Award (Founders Award), which recognizes individuals whose efforts and accomplishments have resulted in increased underrepresented minority participation in the engineering workforce.

The ANSEP enterprise created by Dr. Schroeder in 1995 was recognized in 2012as one of the Top 25 Innovations in American Government by the Harvard Kennedy School’s Ash Center for Democratic Governance. In 2013, ANSEPreceived the Partners in Conservation Award along with the U.S. Geological Survey’s Alaska Area Science Center for exemplary collaborations between Department of the Interior, its bureaus, and organizations across the country that take innovative approaches towards conservation of America’s public lands and resources. In 2014, ANSEP received theU.S. Department of Energy’s Minorities in Energy Award.
