DBI Program Director and Science Advisor Employment Opportunities

The Division of Biological Infrastructure (DBI) is recruiting 4 rotator positions and 1 permanent position in the following programmatic areas:  

A.   Program Director Positions for its Innovation and Capacity Programs: 

1 Permanent Program Director; 2 Rotator Program Directors

DBI is seeking candidates for 1 permanent Program Director position and 2 Rotator Program Director positions for its Infrastructure Innovation for Biological Research (Innovation) and Infrastructure Capacity for Biological Research (Capacity) Programs in the Research Resources Cluster. The Innovation Program supports research to design novel or greatly improved research tools and methods that advance contemporary biology in any research area supported by the Directorate for Biological Sciences (BIO) at NSF. This program supports research infrastructure that is broadly applicable to researchers in three programmatic areas: Bioinformatics, Instrumentation, and Research Methods. The Capacity Program supports the scaling of or major improvements to research tools, products, and services that advance contemporary biology. This program builds capacity in research infrastructure that is broadly applicable to a wide range of researchers in three programmatic areas: Cyberinfrastructure, Biological Collections, and Biological Field Stations and Marine Laboratories.

The research experience and background of the permanent program officer position is sought in such areas as, but not limited to: non-coding RNA analytics and function, phylogenetics and biodiversity, genomics, or transcriptomics research. The research experience and background of the rotator positions are sought in any area of the Innovation and Capacity programs, particularly those that are complementary to the permanent position expertise. Candidates for these positions must have a Ph.D. in one of the areas listed above plus at least six years of experience managing a research program. B.    Program Director Position for Macrosystems Biology and NEON-Enabled Science: 

1 Rotator Program Director

DBI is seeking candidates for a rotator Program Director for 1 position in the Centers, Facilities, and Additional Research Infrastructure Cluster (CFARI). The CFARI Cluster includes programs for larger infrastructure investments, such as the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON), to meet the growing needs of the biological sciences research community and enable US researchers to remain competitive in a global research environment. This Program Director will work primarily with the NEON program that oversees NSF-BIO’s NEON facility, but also support other programs managed in the CFARI cluster as well as the Macrosystems Biology and NEON Enabled Science (MSB-NES) Program that is managed by the Division of Environmental Biology. The research experience and background of candidates for this position is sought in macrosystems biology or other scientific areas supported by the NEON facility, especially continental-scale ecological research with experience in remote-sensing or other broad-scaled and data-enabled research approaches. Candidates for these positions must have a Ph.D. in one of these areas plus at least six years of experience managing a research program. C.    Science Advisor for Infrastructure Assessment:

1 Rotator Science Advisor

DBI is seeking candidates for a Science Advisor focused on assessment and evaluation of research infrastructure including programs supporting computing resources and human resources. DBI is interested in an individual to lead the Division efforts to quantify, evaluate, and assess the different ways that DBI’s programmatic investments in research infrastructure such as instrumentation, computing, training, broadening participation, and cyberinfrastructure impact the mission of BIO. It is expected the Science Advisor will use both data-intensive quantitative and qualitative approaches as needed with a focus on data-informed decision making. Candidates for these positions must have a Ph.D. in one of these areas plus at least six years of experience managing or assessing research programs.
