This week with NSF Director Panchanathan


US National Science Foundation Director Sethuraman Panchanathan had a dynamic week, engaging with various organizations and audiences. On June 5, he participated in The Science Coalition /Association of American Universities (AAU)/Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) fireside chat in Washington, D.C. Moderated by Jill Pentimonti, TSC President and Notre Dame Director of Research Advancement, the discussion focused on the importance of sustained federal funding and the critical role of research universities forming partnerships in driving scientific innovation. The director emphasized NSF's dedication to diversifying the STEM workforce and highlighted the "CHIPS and Science Act of 2022" contributions to these efforts.  

On June 6, the director joined New America to discuss one of NSF's newest efforts to build the future American workforce. He talked about the transformative potential of the NSF Regional Innovation Engines (NSF Engines) program, which spurs multi-sector coalitions to accelerate technology, workforce development and economic growth within a particular region. Panchanathan underscored NSF's dual commitment to curiosity-driven research and use-inspired solutions, which together advance technology and strengthen the national economy. He stressed how NSF's investment in the NSF Engines program has been twofold, focusing on both innovation and workforce development. With an initial $150 million investment in January, the program has leveraged an additional $350 million in matching commitments. These investments will help ensure that the benefits of innovation reach every community, building a future-ready, resilient America.

On Saturday, Panchanathan delivered a heartfelt and motivational address at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Engineering convocation, where he was honored with an honorary doctorate. Reflecting on his experiences at uOttawa, he challenged the graduates to mentor others and carry forward the values of resilience and continuous learning. 

Finally, on June 9, the director gave an inspiring commencement address at Seattle University. He lauded Seattle University 's commitment to inclusivity, research and innovation, drawing parallels between the university's mission and NSF's goal of making STEM accessible to everyone. Highlighting his career as an educator, he encouraged graduates to embody their values as they move forward in their lives and careers.
