Biography:

Janis Coughlin-Piester was appointed as Chief Financial Officer and Office Head, for Budget, Finance, and Award Management at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) in August 2022. In this role, she oversees NSF business operations related to budget, financial management, enterprise risk management, financial assistance and acquisition policy, procurement and grant award actions, award monitoring and audit resolution, performance management, and research infrastructure oversight.

Prior to her current role, Ms. Coughlin-Piester served as the BFA Deputy Office Head for 4 years, bringing with her a wealth of federal experience spanning nearly 20 years. Her career path includes notable positions at the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Management and Budget, Department of Homeland Security, and the Small Business Administration. Her expertise extends to federal budget and appropriations processes, policy development, strategic communication, performance management, and leadership.

Ms. Coughlin-Piester holds a B.A. in Political Science and an M.S. in Public Policy Analysis from the University of Rochester. She resides in Arlington, VA, with her husband and two children.
