NSF's mission is to advance the progress of science, a mission accomplished by funding proposals for research and education made by scientists, engineers, and educators from across the country. Everyone at NSF plays a part in supporting the rigorous merit review process used to evaluate submissions.

People working in the science directorates maintain close contact with science and engineering communities to explore emerging opportunities and to coordinate NSF's "gold standard" merit review process in deciding where to invest NSF funds. The directorates have a rich mix of scientific and administrative staff to ensure the integrity of NSF's programs and processes. Staff in the business operations areas connect with NSF's partners in the academic, government, and private sectors, set policy around how awards are made, manage the agency's financial commitments, and handle the day-to-day operations that support the agency — from information technology to facility management to human resources.

NSF is committed to recruiting, hiring, developing, and retaining a highly qualified workforce representative of the diversity in our nation. With the support of NSF's Office of Equity and Civil Rights (OECR), employees have established several groups that meet to discuss and unite under their common interests and promote a diverse and equal work environment.
