Cyber-enabled Discovery and Innovation: The New NSF Initiative for Transformative Research
ABSTRACT:
The Cyber-enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI) Program is about the advancement of science and engineering along fundamentally new pathways opened by computational thinking, through development and application of computational concepts, methods, models, algorithms, and tools. CDI is an activity that includes all NSF Directorates and programmatic Offices.
CDI projects promise outcomes of consequence to more than one field of science and engineering. Success will require collaborative efforts of researchers in mathematical, physical, social, biological, earth, computing, and engineering sciences, driving development, or creative use, of computational thinking for discovery and innovation.
BIO:
Dr. Sirin Tekinay joined the Division of Computing and Communications Foundations (CCF), National Science Foundation as the Program Director for Theoretical Foundations in Communications Research in 2005, on loan from faculty of New Jersey Institute of Technology, where she is associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 1997. Before then, she worked at Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies, and NORTEL. Sirin received her Ph.D. degree from the School of Information Technology and Engineering at George Mason University. Dr. Sirin Tekinay was the recipient of NJIT's "Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award" in 2003. In 2007, she was the recipient of the NSF Director's Award for Program Management Excellence. She has initiated several NSF programs including SING -- Scientific Foundations for Internet's Next Generation. She has been instrumental for the NSF CDI program, and has been appointed as the Lead of CDI Program and Chair of CDI Implementation Team in National Science Foundation.
