Abstract:

Since the mid 80's, the Condor project (www.cs.wisc.edu/Condor) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has been engaged in the development, implementation, deployment and evaluation of mechanisms and policies that support High Throughput Computing (HTC). Guided by both the technological and sociological challenges of large scale distributed computing environments, the Condor Team has been building and supporting software tools that translate a novel distributed computing framework into production quality capabilities. Today, the team consists of more than 35 computer science students, full time staff and faculty who participate in a wide range of national and international multi-disciplinary science efforts. Integrated into the software stacks of compute intensive projects like the LHC and LIGO as well as production grids like EGEE and OSG, and deployed at more than a 100 universities in the US, fortunate 500 companies, and 1500 sites in academia and industry around the world, these software tools provide a unique platform for experimental computer science.  We will present the principals that guided us in developing our experimental methodology and will discuss the lessons we learned from implementing and supporting an international community of engaged users.  The challenges we face in sustaining and evolving a computer science project that depends on a world-wide experimental infrastructure will be addressed and our thoughts on how to encourage other groups to embrace our approach and methodology will be outlined.

Bio: Miron Livny

Miron Livny received a B.Sc. degree in Physics and Mathematics in 1975 from the Hebrew University and M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the Weizmann Institute of Science in 1978 and 1984, respectively. Since 1983 he has been on the Computer Sciences Department faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he is currently a Professor of Computer Sciences, the director of the Center for High Throughput Computing and is leading the Condor project.

 

Dr. Livny's research focuses on distributed processing and data management systems and data visualization environments. His recent work includes the Condor distributed resource management system, the DEVise data visualization and exploration environment and the BMRB repository for data from NMR spectroscopy.
