Update regarding Antarctic research solicitation

The U.S. National Science Foundation’s Office of Polar Programs (OPP) supports innovative, field-based, Antarctic research that advances fundamental, and systems-level understanding of the rapidly changing Antarctic environment; investigates the relationship between Antarctica and global systems; and supports transformative research in astronomy and astrophysics.

At this time, the solicitation Antarctic Research Requiring U.S. Antarctic Program Support for Fieldwork (23-509) has been archived and a new solicitation has not been issued. Information on a new solicitation is expected to be available in early March. If a new solicitation is not ready in that time, a status update will be provided.

As previously shared, there are numerous logistical constraints under which the U.S. Antarctic Program is operating. As a result, NSF is working to determine the best way to support field-based Antarctic science for the coming year. NSF will provide updates on the status of logistics and its impact on Antarctic field science in the coming months through web updates and community office hours, as conducted in previous seasons.

NSF continues to encourage proposals for Antarctic Research Not Requiring U.S. Antarctic Program Field Support. Projects that support early career researchers and promote diversity in the polar science workforce are particularly welcome.

It is recommended that researchers continue to monitor the OPP Announcements webpage, the OPP Newsletter, as well as other communications from NSF, for the latest information. Updates will also be shared widely with the community through other mechanisms.
