Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research

The responsible and ethical conduct of research (RECR) is critical for excellence, as well as public trust, in science and engineering. RECR involves not only a responsibility to generate and disseminate knowledge with rigor and integrity, but also a responsibility to:

  • Conduct peer review with the highest ethical standards.
  • Diligently protect proprietary information and intellectual property from inappropriate disclosure.
  • Treat students and colleagues fairly and with respect.

Education in RECR is considered essential in the preparation of future scientists and engineers.

Training requirements for NSF-funded institutions

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) requires institutions to have a plan to provide appropriate training and oversight in the responsible and ethical conduct of research for undergraduate students, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, faculty, and other senior personnel who will be supported by NSF to conduct research. The training must include mentor training and mentorship.

For more information about RECR training and the oversight responsibilities of institutions that receive NSF support, refer to the Proposal and Award Policies and Procedures Guide Chapter IX.B.

Research integrity and international contexts

Conducting research in a global context, including when it involves international partners, can present opportunities and challenges that intersect with the responsible and ethical conduct of research.
