SBE Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (SBE/SMA)

The Office of Multidisciplinary Activities (SMA) supports activities that cut across disciplinary boundaries in the Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE) and beyond.

While many programs in the directorate support interdisciplinary work, SMA serves as an incubator for new programs and plays a critical role in the development of these programs' supporting infrastructure.

The office is home to the following programs:

  • Build and Broaden: Enhancing Social, Behavioral and Economic Science Research and Capacity at Minority-Serving Institutions.
  • Centers for Research and Innovation in Science, the Environment and Society
  • Ethical and Responsible Research.
  • SBE Postdoctoral Research Fellowships.
  • SBE Research Experiences for Undergraduates Sites.
  • SBE Science of Broadening Participation.
  • SBE-UKRI Lead Agency Opportunity.

Co-funding with other divisions and other directorates is typical for SMA, as is participation in interagency activities. All areas of the social, behavioral and economic sciences are represented in the SMA portfolio.
