Dr. April Bernard earned her Ph.D. from Northwestern University in Human Development and Social Policy and M.A. in Sociology at the University of Illinois-Chicago.  In addition to serving in administration and faculty positions at universities in the U.S and abroad, April is a social scientist, who has collaborated with local government, nonprofit and international humanitarian organizations.  Her expertise in evidence-based practices, data informed strategic planning, and change management has contributed to the meaningful engagement of impacted communities in initiatives to influence policy and improve outcomes related to workforce development, educational equity, and justice reform.

April’s early exposure to integrated STEM education initiatives in elementary school in Iowa, which included learning how to program computers to do math homework and engaging in science and arts activities that instilled a deep appreciation for nature, remains her primary motivation for dedicating her career to removing barriers to innovative education, research, and workforce development opportunities that help prepare all individuals and communities to maximize their contributions to societal advancement.
