Dr. Emily Greeson
AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellow
Education and Workforce Development Cluster
Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering
Class of 2024-2026
Dr. Emily Greeson has a strong foundation in biology and transdisciplinary team science training. Earning a bachelor's degree in biochemistry from Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), she studied freshwater contamination at Great Lakes beaches by collecting and analyzing freshwater samples from the Saginaw Bay watershed. At SVSU, she worked alongside regional health departments, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy to track sources of contamination in freshwater samples and validate new molecular detection methods. She received a doctorate in microbiology and molecular genetics from Michigan State University (MSU), where her work focused on using molecular biology techniques to create new bacterial therapies for the field of biomedical engineering. During her doctoral studies, she was a Future Academic Scholars in Teaching fellow, working with professors to assess quantitative literacy and collaboration in an undergraduate course. Greeson was also a transdisciplinary graduate fellow at MSU and worked with clinicians in rural Michigan to design, coordinate, and publish a study of barriers to colorectal cancer screening. During her postdoctoral research in Gemma Reguera's lab at MSU, she worked in environmental microbiology to study how bacteria can contribute to new, sustainable building materials via carbon capture and mineralization. Throughout her academic career, Greeson has developed a passion for science education and outreach. She is excited to engage in policy work that supports the next generation of scientists.
