Dr. Martin Liu is a trained food scientist with expertise in biochemistry, food ingredients, and technology transfer. He grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California, with first-generation Chinese parents. Liu attended the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a B.S. in Chemistry. He then attended Cornell University, where he earned a Ph.D. in food science conducting research on characterizing and improving protein ingredients for plant-based foods. During his graduate studies, Liu was highly involved in his graduate student organization, established a departmental community outreach committee, and worked part-time for the Center for Technology Transfer at Cornell University. At NSF, Liu aspires to work at the interface of innovation, technology, and impact – to pull scientific discoveries into real-world settings. In his spare time, Liu continues experimenting in the kitchen and practices the Olympic lifts.
