The MPS Office of Strategic Initiatives (OSI) supports crosscutting research, education and infrastructure in areas of strategic importance for the U.S. National Science Foundation's mission and the broader U.S. scientific enterprise. OSI engages with the entire mathematical and physical sciences research community through the five MPS divisions: Astronomical Sciences, Chemistry, Materials Research, Mathematical Sciences and Physics.
The office also partners with other federal agencies, national laboratories, private industry, state and local governments and international organizations.
A key focus for OSI is supporting innovative methods to expand and broaden the U.S. science, technology, engineering and mathematics workforce, including providing supplemental support for students and researchers from underrepresented groups, including veterans and those with disabilities.

What we support
OSI aims to catalyze a broad scope of activities, oftentimes by providing the necessary seed funding so new programs can grow and become self-sustaining. OSI does not fund research and education proposals directly but provides co-funding to proposals submitted to programs throughout the MPS divisions, including the following programs.
NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institutes
This program supports large-scale interdisciplinary research projects focused on advancing quantum information science, engineering and technology through collaboration, education and innovation.
Workforce development and broadening participation
OSI strives to inspire and prepare the next generation of researchers who will lead the U.S. STEM enterprise and create the innovations of tomorrow. From high school students to postdoctoral researchers and other early-career scientists, OSI provides support that helps more people and communities pursue rewarding careers in the mathematical and physical sciences.
