Data repositories
Biological and Chemical Oceanography Data Management Office (BCO-DMO)
Research projects funded by the NSF Biological Oceanography and Chemical Oceanography programs must be registered with the BCO-DMO. Data from the funded projects should be either deposited directly with BCO-DMO or archived elsewhere and data link as well as relevant metadata should be provided to BCO-DMO.
CLIVAR and Carbon Hydrographic Data Office (CCHDO)
CCHDO supports oceanographic research by providing access to high quality, global, vessel-based conductivity, temperature and depth and hydrographic data from the Global Ocean Ship-Based Hydrographic Investigations Program (GO-SHIP), World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE), Climate and Ocean - Variability, Predictability and Change (CLIVAR) and other repeat hydrography programs
Marine Geoscience Data System (MGDS)
MGDS is a data repository that provides free public access to a curated collection of marine geophysical data products and complementary data collected throughout the global oceans.
National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF)
The National Deep Submergence Facility (NDSF) manages data collected by the submersible Alvin, ROV Jason and AUV Sentry.
EarthChem
EarthChem provides open data services to the geochemical, petrological, mineralogical and related communities.
Seismological Facility for the Advancement of Geoscience (SAGE) Data Management Center (DMC)
SAGE DMC serves marine seismic data collected by ocean bottom seismometers (OBS).
Community Surface Dynamics Modeling System (CSDMS)
CSDMS develops, supports, and disseminates integrated software modules that predict the erosion, transport, and deposition of sediment and solutes in landscapes and their sedimentary basins. CSDMS provides a repository for many different model types dealing with surface Earth processes and sediment distribution.
Microstructure Database
Scripps Institution of Oceanography maintains this website for archiving and reporting on microstructure data. Data should be provided as described on the website and in coordination with CCHDO at the University of California, San Diego.
National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI)
NCEI archives and provides access to a wide range of data including oceanographic and coastal data, weather and climate data, surface meteorological data, paleoclimate and paleoceanographic data, and geophysical and geological data.
NOAA's World Data Service for Paleoclimatology (NOAA-Paleo)
NOAA-Paleo archives and distributes a wide range of paleoclimate and paleoceanographic data contributed by scientists around the world.
National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI)
NCBI is a facility of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) that provides access to biomedical and genomic information.
GenBank
GenBank is the National Institutes of Health (NIH) genetic sequence database and has an annotated collection of publicly available DNA sequences.
GitHub and Zenodo
For numerical modeling code and output, GitHub is a repository for where version-controlled model code and Zenodo allows users to deposit model results.
Sample repositories
Institutional repositories for sediment and rock samples ensure that samples of sediment and rock collected from the seafloor are properly curated, preserved and disseminated to qualified researchers.
NSF-approved institutional marine sample repositories
- Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
- Oregon State University
- University of Rhode Island
- Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution
- Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Index to Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples (IMLGS)
IMLGS is a tool to help scientists locate geologic material stored in repositories around the world.
