Appointment of Dr. James McManus as Division Director for the Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE)


I am pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. James McManus as Division Director for the Division of Ocean Sciences (OCE) in the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO).  This appointment will be effective on July 17, 2022.  

Dr. McManus has over 30 years of experience in marine and environmental research with a broad portfolio of accomplishments in marine chemistry, geology, biology, and physics. He received his BSc in Chemistry from Stockton State College and his PhD in Oceanography from Oregon State University. He also completed post-doctoral research at the University of Southern California and Oregon State University. Since 2016, Dr. McManus has served as the Vice President for Research and Administration at the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. He previously held positions as Chair of the Department of Geosciences at the University of Akron, and faculty positions at Oregon State University and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Dr. McManus was an IPA in the Division of Ocean sciences from 2008-2009.

I would like to express my appreciation for Dr. Terrence Quinn’s leadership of the Division of Ocean Sciences over the past four years. The Directorate for Geosciences and the Foundation greatly appreciate his significant contributions. Dr. Quinn’s direction in implementing the OCE decadal plan, “Sea Change”, has greatly benefitted ocean research community. Dr. Quinn will be transitioning the role of Division Director to Dr. McManus until his departure on July 22.
