The Advisory Committee for Geosciences advises the U.S. National Science Foundation and the Directorate for Geosciences (GEO) on support for geoscience research, infrastructure and education.
Advisory committee members perform the following duties:
- Provide advice and recommendations on support for research, education, human resources, infrastructure and logistics, and related activities in the atmospheric, earth, ocean and polar sciences.
- Provide broad input on long-range directorate plans and partnership opportunities.
- Deliberate and assess the state of geoscience education and research initiatives.
- Oversee program management, balance and performance.
- Provide advice on the impact of NSF-wide policies on the GEO scientific community.

Note about the Advisory Committee for Polar Programs
The Advisory Committee for Polar Programs operated from 1998 - 2013 and then functioned as a subcommittee of the Advisory Committee for Geosciences from 2013 - 2017. The Advisory Committee for Polar Programs was re-established in 2017 and dissolved in 2023 when members were invited to join the Advisory Committee for Geosciences.
