About CMMI

The Division of Civil, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) is one of four divisions in the U.S. National Science Foundation Directorate for Engineering.

CMMI supports fundamental engineering research and education focused on:

  • Revitalizing manufacturing capabilities and methods.
  • Designing innovative engineering materials and building technologies.
  • Promoting resilient and sustainable civil infrastructure.
  • Enabling next-generation tools and systems for decision-making, robotics and controls.

What we support

CMMI funds fundamental research and education that advances civil, design, mechanical, industrial, systems, manufacturing and materials engineering.

Areas of interest include:

Core programs

CMMI maintains numerous long-term programs, called core programs, that fund research and education.

Supports the fundamental research needed to revitalize American manufacturing to grow the national prosperity and workforce, and to reshape our strategic industries.

Learn more about Advanced Manufacturing (AM).

Supports fundamental research on the modeling, analysis, diagnostics, measurement, and control of dynamical systems, including but not limited to those involving physical interaction between humans and embodied artificial intelligences.

Funded as part of this program cluster:

Learn more about the Dynamics, Controls and Cognition cluster.

Supports research into the opportunities and challenges that digital technologies present for the next industrial revolution — such as connectivity, automation, and secure collaboration and their roles in global manufacturing.

Learn more about Manufacturing Systems Integration (MSI)

Supports fundamental research aimed at advances in the transformation and use of engineering materials efficiently, economically, and sustainably.

Funded as part of this program cluster:

Learn more about the Mechanics and Engineering Materials cluster.

Supports fundamental research in design, operation, optimization and control to advance the complex engineered and socio-technical systems critical to society.

Funded as part of this program cluster:

Learn more about the Operations and Design (OD) cluster.

Who we are

CMMI's workforce is composed of federal employees and scientists from research institutions in temporary positions with expertise across all engineering fields.
